Presentation: Nonprofit Fraud Cases, Old and New: Updates and Insights From Following Social Media Bread Crumbs

Speaker: Kris Kalanges, Oregon Department of Justice Investigator

Bio: After graduating from the Post-Bac Accounting Program at PSU, Kris started his public accounting career in the tax department of Moss Adams in their Portland office, where he acquired his CPA. Later, his work at the IRS as a SEP (Special Enforcement Program) Revenue Agent opened up the world of financial fraud investigations to him. He spent an additional four years as an IRS Fraud Technical Advisor. After retiring from the IRS he moved into private sector forensic accounting before joining the Oregon DOJ Civil Enforcement Division as a financial investigator in the Charitable Activities Section. Kris is a Certified Economic Crimes Forensic Examiner (CECFE). He is part of a team, along with Portland Police Bureau Det. Brian Sitton, CFE, and TriMet Budget Director Nancy Young-Oliver, CPA/CFE, which teaches forensic accounting at PSU as part of the Justice for Fraud Victims Project. He has been married for forty-two years to Denise. His eldest daughter is an attorney and recently took a break from academia where she was an Associate Professor of Law at Notre Dame Law School. In contrast, Kris, his wife and two other adult daughters are mere mortals. Kris is a recovering jazz guitarist, has an Amateur Extra ham radio license, and enjoys hiking in the Gorge, going to concerts and restoring classic firearms.
